BL2 relates a Jack who is more outwardly abusive, specifically at a point in the story where Jack takes on a more disturbing vibe. The contradiction that does absolutely matter is how he treats Angel when putting her in the chair. Jack, a murderous insecure narcissist, strangles Tassiter in both instances, yielding the same vision of the character. Yes, it's a different temporal sequence of cause and effect, but Jack is effectively the same character in both sequences. TPS towards the end of the game Jack clearly says to Tassiter he is going to come kill him during there final echo conversation So in the end it isn't deep or complex as the writers would have us think, it is just a mess :P
The hole just get really deep when you start trying to categorize his behavior across all the games.
One was a good guy and hero who legitimately lose himself in grief becoming a sociopath. One was a Psychopath who masked his lack of empathy with his narcissism. To tie that back to what your saying I think different writers had different interpretations of Jack which as you said created two different versions. Upon Tassiter insulting Jack he makes an impulse decision to kill Tassiter. In BL2 we had an echo that implied Jack used some kind of Blackmail to have Tassiter give up his position. In TPS towards the end of the game Jack clearly says to Tassiter he is going to come kill him during there final echo conversation. Now looking at timelines well TBH the echo recordings of "Getting to know Jack" in BL2 contradict more then just Angel going in the chair. His character frequently shift between psycho and socio if we are looking at characterization.
